TitleLetter from H M [Hector Munro] Macdonald, 52 College Bounds, Aberdeen, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorMacdonald; Hector Munro (1865-1935); British mathematician
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date7 May 1910
DescriptionHe has just received the fourth volume of Kelvin's papers. His only disappointment has been that the editor [Larmor] has been too careful to let the author speak for himself, and Macdonald would like to know the editor's views on several points. He is glad to own the volume and thanks Larmor for sending it. Macdonald is still engaged with [Colin] Maclaurin when he has time. He had no idea that Maclaurin was so in advance of both his contemporaries and later writers. His preface to the fluxions is 'masterly' and 'he had discovered the method of converting a slowly converging series into a rapidly converging one...'. He had an appreciation of limitations 'as any modern German'.
