Title | Letter from J C [John Cunningham] McLennan, University of Toronto, to Sir Joseph [Larmor] |
Creator | McLennan; Sir John Cunningham (1867-1935; British physicist |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 25 February 1914 |
Description | He has received Larmor's note and thanks him for kindness in presenting McLennan's papers. He is sorry to put Larmor to trouble over the paper, since he did not pay attention to that copy, which was just to let Larmor know what he was doing. He went over the copy sent to [Arthur] Schuster himself. It was done in a hurry but he hoped it was ready for the printer. He was anxious to have it acceptable to Schuster, because of the criticisms he made, and in view of his possible candidature for the R.S. [Royal Society]. He gives a description of his spectroscopy work, which grew out of classroom laboratory work, and were therefore little advances on what had been done by others. He found the paper on iodine vapour the most personally satisfying. He misses contact with those working along similar lines and wishes he had someone there to discuss his work with. He is sorry about the R.S. matter, C.T.R. Wilson offered to out him up and McLennan thought he was looking after it, but he has not yet written. McLennan can feel discouraged but he can at least feel that he is stimulating a love of physics in those around him. |
