TitleLetter from J C [John Cunningham] McLennan, to Sir Joseph [Larmor]
CreatorMcLennan; Sir John Cunningham (1867-1935; British physicist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date3 August 1915
DescriptionHe spoke to his brother-in-law and he said that the armoured car division was part of the Admiralty service. He had applied in writing and in person for the post mentioned and the official he spoke to asked if his father was in the army, implying that it would then be easier to get what he wanted. Douglas applied for a commission sereval times and was told he was too old at 35. He undertook work on his own and at his own expense. He could get a commission now, but would be under 'boy officers', which he does not feel like. He would like a post on his own and he thought of the motor service, where he could drive his own car. McLennan asks Larmor not to do anything unless he thinks it desirable; if there is no place for Douglas he will continue his work with the Anglo-Francaise Ambulance Service. He is obliged for the suggestion about the Inventions Committee and will write to see if he can be of service; he thinks they want soldiers from Canada and little else.
