Title | Letter from Herbert McLeod, 9 Coverdale, Richmond, Surrey, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | McLeod; Herbert (1841-1923); British chemist |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 16 June 1906 |
Description | He met W.E. [William Edward] Wilson at the last soiree, who said that the letters from [George Gabriel] Stokes and the actinometer were now in Larmor's hands, but that anything of importance had been published. McLeod was unable to continue the experiments at Cooper's Hill for the want of an equatorial mounting and photographic apparatus. The committee suggested that the instrument should go to Wilson, who subsequently sent two photographs made by the instrument, saying that the method did not give good results. He notes what he thought were weak points in the instrument; Stokes though he was mistaken and McLeod admired the way Stokes worked out its theory. |
