| Title | Letter from E [Ernest] Rutherford, 17 Wilmslow Road, Withington, Manchester, to [Joseph] Larmor |
| Creator | Rutherford; Ernest; Baron Rutherford of Nelson (1871-1937); New Zealand physicist |
| Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
| Date | 22 March 1919 |
| Description | He has received Larmor's letter about Shipley's remarks and Rutherford sets out his state of mind. The Cavendish post would have been very attractive to him under normal conditions, remuneration being of secondary importance. The post 'loaded with J.J.T.' [Joseph John Thomson] has to be looked at as carefully as a 'live shell'. Before seeing the resolutions, he wrote to Thomson to say that the attractions of the post would not compensate for any disturbance of their friendship, setting out possible working conditions. He quotes J.J. Thomson's views on co-working with students. Rutherford reflected upon these and concluded that Thomson would take an unequal number of students and share of the research direction. Thomson does not appreciate the difficulties for any newcomer, he feels, and thinks that the outlook is unpromising.
