Title | Letter from Karl Pearson, University College, London, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Pearson; Karl [formerly Carl] (1857-1936); British statistician and eugenicist |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 2 November 1898 |
Description | Pearson hopes that Larmor and [Ernest William] Hobson are able to interpret question 9 on the B.Sc. pass examination, as it beats Pearson and many of the candidates. He asks what plane the question's circular disc is in, and if the velocity is translation or spin. 'This is just the sort of question which gets a modest dull boy ploughed, for he will not write his examiner down as an ass & pass on to the next question'. If Larmor taught elementary mathematics he would give more attention to setting papers. He thinks that Larmor and Hobson never passed such a question in a Cambridge paper, and Pearson concludes his 'grumble' by saying that he is tired of explaining what London University examiners mean, wishing that 'somebody would put a torpedo under the whole concern'. |
