TitleLetter from Warren de la Rue, 73 Portland Place, to [Arthur] Schuster
CreatorRue; Warren de la (1815-1889); British chemist and astronomer
RecipientSchuster; Sir Arthur [formerly Franz Arthur Friedrich] (1851-1934); German physicist
Date26 March 1881
DescriptionHe will not be able to present at the meeting on 1 April as he will be engaged at the Royal Institution. He does not think it expedient that the R.A.S. [Royal Astronomical Society] should commit itself to an abstract resolution such as the first, which is vague. He cannot see that it is likely that any investigation would produce results useful to the public: 'take for instance the researches of Galvani, Volta, Ampere, Faraday & others in electricity'. He thinks the word 'immediately' should be inserted before 'useful'. He queries who would be responsible for research, believing that observations carried out over time might reasonably be funded by Government. He does not argue with the second resolution, thinking it 'most desirable' to establish a physical solar observatory somewhere in British Dominions. He cannot appreciate the purpose of resolutions 3 and 4. Professor Smith intends to move a resolution on the passing of the first resolution, and therefore Schuster should speak to him.
