TitleLetter from George North, Watton near Hertford, to Martin Folkes, Queen's Square, London
CreatorNorth; George (1707-1772): numismatist
RecipientFolkes; Martin (1690 - 1754); antiquary and natural philosopher
Date15 December 1739
DescriptionWrites that he is sharing his observations on ancient English Coins with Folkes at the suggestion of Mr Willis. [This appears to be a covering letter, the observations are not enclosed]. North is a country curate, an enthusiastic amateur without access to great collections of antiquities. He was gratified to see that his approach to dating ancient coins, by matching the names on the reverses with the names of moneyors in surviving records, is the method Folkes himself advocates. If Folkes is interested in these first observations North sugges he can send more concerning his parochial antiquities.
