| Title | Letter from [George Parker, 2nd Earl] Macclesfield, Shirburn [Shirburn Castle, Oxfordshire] to [Martin Folkes] |
| Creator | Parker; George (c 1697 - 1764); 2nd Earl of Macclesfield; astronomer and politician |
| Recipient | Folkes; Martin (1690 - 1754); antiquary and natural philosopher |
| Date | 8 August 1743 |
| Description | Thanks Folkes for visiting Shirburn Castle with his companions and inspecting Macclesfield's observatory. Apologises that the welcome was not sufficiently "hearty and sincere"in his own view but suggests that Folkes return for a longer visit the following year. Macclesfield was glad to be introduced to Mr [Colin] Maclaurin and hopes Maclaurin learned something that will help improve his own observatory. Macclesfield was particularly proud to have his quadrant examined by Mr Graham's discerning eye and hoes his approval will add veracity to any observations made with the instrument. Sends Folkes respects from Lady Macclesfield [Mary Parker nee Lane], Mr Jones and Mr Hunt. |
