| Creator | Prideaux; Edmund (1693-1745); artist and antiquarian |
| Recipient | Folkes; Martin (1690 - 1754); antiquary and natural philosopher |
| Date | 21 September 1739 |
| Description | Prideaux has travelled to Genoa on a felucca from Antibes, stopping at Villa France [Villefranche?], Monaco, St Remo [Sanremo] and Noli. En route to Antibes he stopped at Frejus, describes the Roman remains he saw there including an amphitheatre, aqueduct, old town walls and gate. He reports on his visit to the Prince's palace at Monaco, he describes its position on a high-cliffed peninsula and characterises it as well furnished and with many pictures, but no good ones. These include portraits of the Royal Family whom Prideaux characterises as weak-jawed or French beauties. Included in the latter is a picture of the monarch's first mistress on horseback. Admires the coast as a great entertainment, being "full of vineyards, olive grounds and little country houses".
Letter continues under the date 22nd September. Prideaux reports briefly that he has been able to see some churches and the Balbi Palace in his time at Genoa. Sends regards from Mr Jackson who reports that he has not heard from his brother so does not know if Folkes was able to pass on the £200 to him from Child. Sends regards from hmiself and Humphrey [Prideaux]. |
