Title | Letter from Antonio Cocchi, Florence, to [Martin Folkes] |
Creator | Conti; Antonio Schinella (1677 - 1749); mathematician |
Recipient | Folkes; Martin (1690 - 1754); antiquary and natural philosopher |
Date | 31 March 1736 |
Description | He has received Folkes's letter some days ago, and has received both the money from Mr. Jackson and the box with the noble present of eight volumes of the complete Philosophical Transactions and other fine books. Note on Dr. Mangey, and Cocchi writing to Mr. Skinner to recover money from Mrs. Colman. Signor Micheli will have to be patient with Dr. Sherard if he refuses to give him his book. Cocchi is overjoyed at hearing of Folkes's intention to come to Italy again and offers help with accommodation and advice on what to bring. He would be able to use Cocchi's house and his terrace for astronomical observations. Electrical and physical experiments are much admired and he should bring good prisms and a microscope. He asks Folkes to procure a good pocket magnifying glass, like Folkes's, so that he may look at anatomical niceties, and some syringes. He has lately got the substitution to the Professorship of Anatomy at the Hospital and he gves lectures each Tuesday, dissecting twice a week. He took up the position on 13 December by giving a Latin discourse in the Library of the Hospital. He has been more than glad to make such observations, as this will enable him to publish notes on the Greek Surgeons which he has copied. He will pay Folkes for any expenditure on his behalf, including for good books such as Ridley on the Brain. Yesterday Cocchi saw 'your innocent flame' having been consulted on the disease of her putative mother. She mentioned Folkes's kindness and desired to remember her service. Cocchi executed his commission of showing her Folkes's first Letter. Monsignor Cerati will glad of the news of being admitted into a respectable Society although Cocchi did not write to him, expecting the letters of the Secretary.
