TitleLetter from John Montagu [2nd Duke of Montagu], London, to Martin Folkes
CreatorMontagu; John (1690 - 1749); 2nd Duke of Montagu
RecipientFolkes; Martin (1690 - 1754); antiquary and natural philosopher
Date20 November 1733
DescriptionMontagu apologises for not writing sooner, jokingly blaming his "natural indolence". Says Folkes is missed by the "Ditton congress". Mentions a matter concerning Folkes’ brother [William Folkes] raised the day Folkes left Ditton and reassures Folkes that, as his friend, Montagu is happy to assist anyone connected to Folkes but knew the Robert Walpole was better placed to serve Folkes’ brother and referred the matter to him. Montagu has also appointed Folkes brother as agent to pay the garrison in the Isle of Wight. Montagu eagerly awaits the Princess Royal’s wedding [Anne, Princess Royal and Princess of Orange] but the groom, the Prince of Orange is gravely ill. Montagu comments on the Prince’s popularity and his appearance and good nature. He thinks the wedding will be a spectacle Folkes will enjoy more than anything he has seen abroad and hopes he will attend. Mary Duchess of Montagu [formerly Lady Mary Churchill] and Lady Cardigan [Mary Montagu Countess of Cardigan, later Lady Montagu] send their compliments to Folkes and his wife [Lucretia Folkes nee Bradshaw] and to "the young philosopher".
