TitleLetter from John Montagu [2nd Duke of Montagu], Ditton, to Martin Folkes
CreatorMontagu; John (1690 - 1749); 2nd Duke of Montagu
RecipientFolkes; Martin (1690 - 1754); antiquary and natural philosopher
Date5 February 1741
DescriptionRegarding the appointment of a new Astronomer Royal after the death of Edmond Halley. Montagu thinks Halley’s position is ‘upon the establishment of the ordnance’ [Montagu was Master-General of the Ordnance 1740-1742 and 1742–1749] and he will give [James] Bradley the position if it is in his gift or influence the King to do so. Montagu thinks ‘the sea’ is also concerned about getting a proper astronomer and so will petition for Bradley with Sir Charles Wager [First Lord of the Admiralty]. Sends Folkes the compliments of the Duchess of Montagu [Mary Montagu formerly Lady Mary Churchill]. Endorsed on the verso side containing the address as well as a note that ‘all payments remitted to 25 Dec. 1698’.
