| Recipient | Folkes; Martin (1690 - 1754); antiquary and natural philosopher |
| Date | 17 February 1741 |
| Description | Montagu believes he is shortly to be replaced as Master of the Ordnance by the Duke of Argyll [Field Marshal John Campbell, 2nd Duke of Argyll, 1st Duke of Greenwich]. Montagu has heard from Folkes' brother [William Folkes] that Folkes intends to resign his masterships at the [Royal Military] Academy and invites him to backdate the resignation so it can be dealt with by Montagu not his replacement. He advises him to avoid writing anything in his resignation that should not be seen by the Office of Ordnance. Endorsed on page 3. |
