Title | Letter from [James] Gregorie to John Collins, dated at St Andrews |
Date | 23 November 1670 |
Description | Discusses latest plans to publish a universal method to solve equations "yet unheard of in Mathematics, both in geometry and analytics" and that can be performed without tables, this should not prevent Collins from publishing his own work. Expands on the method with equations and examples of applications, part of the demonstration are in Latin. Refers at the end to Mr [Isaac] Newton's method as possibly superceding his own, as he can only get to approximations, passage underlined in red and with quotation marks in the margins. Adds in postscriptum additional calculations.
Annotated in Collins' hand 'Amendments of his Geometricall Exercises, a generall method of Interpretations - Limits of Aequations Series for Sines, Tangens, Spirales arcuum rectrificatricis' on the last page, bottom right corner.
Annotation top right corner of first page, 'No. 17: p. 96' in reference to the inclusion of paragraph related to Newton in 'Commercium Epistolicum' 1722 edition, page 96, paragraph XVII. |
