Languishes Taylor's long silence. Remond himself hasn't had a chance to answer all Taylor's philosophical difficulties as his "heart and spirit" have been kept too busy by two young female visitors for the past two months.
Wishes Taylor all the best for the New Year. Will have scientific news when back in Paris. Discusses Hermant's book, seems a very sound book although Remond has only glanced at it.
[Francois] Nicole has stayed [in Montmort] three weeks and would have stayed more as he was very smitten with "Miss Henot"Henot but had to get back to the Académie des sciences.
Abbé [Jacques-Bénigne Lignel]Bossuet is on the Regent's good side in court.
Sends his regards to [Isaac] Newton, [Edmund] Halley; [Gilbert] Burnet[t]; [Willem s'] Gravesande; [Hans] Sloane. Sends his reproaches to [Abraham] de Moivre for his latest publication which does not match what he had promised.
Asks for political news from England and mentions events related to the Jacobite rising: the Duke of Ormond is thought to still be to France [after fleeing his impeachment for high treason], asking whether the Ch[evalier] de St. George [James Stuart, the Old Pretender] is still in Scotland and [James 1st Earl] Waldegrave having to flee.
Has sent [Jean?] Bernoulli a copy of Taylor's book. Signs as previous letter "No on loves you and honours you more perfectly than I do".
Postscriptum dated 2 January: has just received a letter from Taylor dated 6 December. Thanks for confirming his calculation and would like to see Taylor's memthod applied to more calculations.
Exchange news about Moivre's health and reiterates his appreciation of him. Questions [Moivre]'s choice to publish his next edition in English rather than in Latin. |
