| Description | Daily diary entries commencing with [p.1-2, 25 November] 'Called at Sir Jos. Banks's about Nautical Almanack...' before continuing with a visit to Mr. [Samuel] Lysons to see his drawings of the Woodchester pavement [the Great Orpheus pavement] which Blagden describes in detail, alongside Lyson's other collections. He notes a visit to Lord Ailesbury {Thomas Brudenell-Bruce] who showed a letter from Mr. Brand discussing Roman statues found by [Gavin] Hamilton, including a marble of Bacchus with traces of gilded drapery on the shoulder. He describes Lord and Lady Lucan [Margaret Bingham] the latter a 'very pleasant talking woman' who has 'revived the lost art of raised gilding on paper'. [p.5 28 November] Blagden refers to a letter of Sir George Staunton sent to Sir Joseph Banks on 30 March 1793, indicating a favourable reception from the Emperor of China, the possibility of his remaining as Minister plenipotentiary, and with some description of the coral islands arond Java. Ending [p.8, 4 December] with various other social and professional calls. |
