Title | Letter from John Thos [Thomas] Stanley, Audley Square, to C [Charles] Hatchett, Belle Vue House, Chelsea |
Creator | Stanley; John Thomas; first Baron Stanley of Alderley (1766-1850); British politician |
Recipient | Hatchett; Charles (1765-1847); British chemist |
Date | 2 June 1836 |
Description | He returns thanks for the curious treatise on the spikenard and wonders why it is not cultivated 'to cure all our wounds & fill our houses with delightful odours'. He will dine at their club today, and hopes to find Hatchett there. He has been reading a work on Petra and asks if Hatchett has seen it. He sees nothing wonderful in spending money to cut rocks into temples and ornamental tombs when the trade of the world went through the Persian Gulf. Petra was a convenient place for merchants to meet. The wonder is they knew so little of Petra. |
