Title | Letter from Alexander Crichton, St Petersburg, to Charles Hatchett, Hammersmith |
Creator | Crichton; Alexander (1763-1856); British physician and author |
Recipient | Hatchett; Charles (1765-1847); British chemist |
Date | 25 June 1805 |
Description | Informs Hatchett that this letter will be delivered by Dr Morrison who is to return to London and intends to work in technical chemistry. Morrison's aim is to establish a sulphuric acid and sal ammoniac factory in St Petersburg and Crichton has advised him to contact companies and men of science in London, recommending him to Hatchett. Crichton has spent almost every day for the past six months in attending the Imperial Family or other patients 'for which I get diamond rings, & gold snuffboxes, and great praise'. The streets of the Imperial City are poor, despite the grandeur of the place. Crichton jokes that the violent concussions of travel are responsible for haemorrhoids, 'this is a new discovery in pathology!' Notes the stagnation of sciences and requests papers by Wollaston and Tennant. Comments on Wollaston and palladium. |
