| Description | He has been asked to approach Boys unofficially on behalf of the Burnett Trust to find out if he would be interested in providing a course of lectures. Darwin thinks that the series is around twelve lectures for which payment is £600. The nature of the lectureship mixes religion and science and therefore this puts off many potential lecturers. Stokes and Robertson Smith have done it, speaking mostly on science with just a few words on religion to satisfy the terms of the Trust. Darwin thinks it a bad arrangement as does the Trustee he knows, but they would prefer the money to do some good. If Boys cannot do it, Darwin asks that he recommend someone else. Gives news of his Whippet [bicycle] and says he has received Boys's letter forwarded from Mr Pye. |
