| Description | He believes that the plant raised by Boys from the Lucretian dinner fruit is Clerodendron trichotomum. Recommends an ant killer for wall fruit, saying that it would be unwise to use boiling water or cyanide to kill ants. Notes that nettles are enjoying a vogue for their fibres during wartime - the National Physical Laboratory has taken up the idea. He would rather have a good show of 'Lords and Ladies' than nettles but gives directions for their destruction, should Boys choose. Discusses damson trees. Kew has escaped bomb damage so far, but bombs have landed between the gardens and the railway station He does not go to London often, now, because of the difficulty in moving about: 'one is apt to be caught by air raid warnings and then have to go to earth like a rabbit!' |
