| Description | An account of vaccination against smallpox using the English method of Edward Jenner as practised at the East India Company's Factory at Canton [Guangzhou] in China. This English language version was drawn up by Alexander Pearson (1780-1874) the Company surgeon at Canton and then translated for Chinese use by George Thomas Staunton. A note at the conclusion of the manuscript states that Staunton's translation was published by 'Gniurqua of the House of Hoei Lung' [?] a Hong system merchant of Canton in the 6th Moon of the tenth year of the reign of Emperor KiaKing [Jiaqing]. |
