Known as Cust; Sir Brownlow; 4th Baronet from 1770-1776, when he has elevated to Baron. In the Record of the Royal Society the name of this Fellow, elected 8/5/1783 is given as Lord John Brownlow which appears to be a mistake that was later replicated in this authority file. Of the various Lord John Brownlows of Belton (1st Baronet, 1590-1679; 3rd Baronet, 1659-1697; and 5th Baronet, 1st Viscount Tyrconnel 1690-1754 (FRS 1735)) none were alive to be elected in 1783. The direct male Brownlow lineage and titles ended with the death of Brownlow Cust's maternal unlce John Brownlow, 1st Viscount Tyrconnel in 1754. Cust was given the christian name Brownlow as it was his mother's maiden name and 'Brownlow' seems at some point to have been mistaken by the Royal Society for his surname or confused with his unlce John Brownlow elected FRS 1735. The name on this authority record has been corrected to Brownlow Cust to match the date of election and dates of existence as previously listed, and the individual who was Baron Brownlow at election date 8 May 1783. John Brownlow has been retained as another form of name though it does not seem to have been used for this individual anywhere other than the Record of the Royal Society. 11/09/2020 |
