Serving in RAF as an officer in the radar branch (1941-1946); returned to St John's College Cambridge to take his Ph.D. then worked at the Cavendish laboratory, then to teach Physics at London University.Joined the department of atomic energy int he Ministry of Supply and took up his first appintment at Windscale(1950); assistant director of technical policy, based at Risley in Lancashire, after formation of the Atomic energy Authority (1954); subsequently technical director, then managing director of its production group, and became a member of the authority in 1964. President of British Nuclear Forum (1984-1992).
