Career:
Moved to London (1847); research assistant to Professor August Hofmann (FRS 1851) (1848); published papers on chemical topics, including the cyanide compounds and insecticides (1846-1865); studied parthenogenesis in aphids (1865); fractured his leg in two places while trying to reach the long focus of a Newtonian telescope (1882); died from a short illness (1905).
