Activity | Education: Coimbra University, MB (1702) Career: Practised as a physician in London. Admitted to Royal College of Physicians on 19 March 1721. Physician to the Portuguese envoy extraordinaire (later Ambassador) in London, Antonio Galvao de Castelo-Branco (from 1724). Retained connections with an international network of Portuguese Jesuits whilst in London and acted as a conduit of information between them and the Royal Society, including sharing of astronomical observations. OtherInfo | Samuda was the first Fellow of Jewish heritage to be elected to the Royal Society. Arrested on 23 August 1703 during the Portuguese Inquisition, tortured and convicted de vehemente of Judaizing, at an auto da fé held in Lisbon on 19 October 1704 after which he fled to London with other members of his family. Changed his name to Ishac de Sequeira Samuda at the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue in London in 1709. |
