Learned drawing and painting; studied under Joseph Farrinton and John Hoppner in London (1797-1802); toured India, Ceylon and Abyssinia with George Viscount Valentia (FRS 1816) (1802-1806); sent by the Government to Abyssinia (1809-1811); British Consul General for Egypt (1815-1827); discovered the Abu Simbel inscriptions (1817); collected Egyptian antiquities and in 1818 sold some to the British Museum, including the splendid bust of Rameses II, others to the French government; died of a disease of the spleen
