Entered the Royal Navy as assistant engineer (1879); appointed to the Admiralty (1884-1914); chief engineer (1889); staff engineer (1893); fleet engineer (1897); chief inspector (1901); deputy engineer-in-chief (1902); succeeded Engineer Vice-Admiral Sir Albert John Durston as engineer-in-chief of the fleet, with the rank of engineer vice-admiral (1907); retired as engineer-in-chief of the fleet (1917).
