Settled in medical practice in Berkeley (1773); his discovery of vaccination against small pox, practised on James Phipps (1796) was included in his publication 'Inquiry into the causes and effects of variolae vaccinae' (1798); petitioned Parliament and received a grant of £10,000 for his discovery (1802)
