OtherInfoSucceeded his step-brother as cashier-general of the East India Company in 1702 and retired from the position in 1737. Famous for maintaining a garden with plants of interest from the colonies. Became acquainted with natural historians such ass Hans Sloane, James Petiverm and William Sherard, with whome he shared plants and cultivation observations. Obtained rice seed from India which was introduced into British South Carolina in 1766 via Thomas Marsh.
