Career:
Worked as a labouring gardener after leaving school aged 10; print worker; telegraphist; gardener to Osten Walker, naturalist (1883); Grosvenor Museum, Chester, Curator; studied Coccidae or scale insects establihsing his reputation as an entomologist; published a book on the British Coccidae (1902) with help of a grant from the Royal Society secured by Sir Edward Poulton FRS which allowed him to travel to collect material; assistant to Eleanor Omerod pioneer of agricultral entomology; Lecturer in Medical and Economic Parasitology, Professor of Tropical Diseases, University of Liverpool. Hon Curator, Chester Archaeological Society.
