Activity | Education: From age of five identified as maths prodigy; won scholarship to Cheltenham Ladies College; one of nine women undergraduates out of an intake of 180 on a maths course at Cambridge, but in third year transferred to English. Ph.D on the scientific methods of Sir Francis Bacon, reflecting the intellectual eclecticism for which she is now renowned. Career: Historian Centenary Professor of Renaissance Studies, Queen Mary, University of London; Director, Centre for Editing Lives and Letters, Queen Mary, University of London; visiting professor of history, Princeton University, USA; Honorary Fellow of King's College Cambridge; member of the Board of Management of the Arts and Humanities Research Board; Member of the Council of the Royal Institution until 2009, then resigned at the time of the leaving of Susan Greenfield. Chair of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority 2008-January 2014. Honorary doctorates of Leters fronm the University of St Andrews, Sheffield Hallam University and the Oopen University. An Honorary doctorate of Science from the University of Aberdeen. Made an Honorary Bencher of the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple. Awarded the Norton Medlicott Medal (2006) by the Historical Association. Awarded the Francis Bacon Award int he History fo Science by the California Institute of Technology in 2012, and collected the Bacon Medal for this award at the annual History ofd Science Society meeting in San Diego in September 2012.
