| Description | In reply to the Under Secretary's letter of 3 June [1886], Stokes describes the arrangements being contemplated for the observation of the total eclipse on the 29 August, which are based to a large extent on suggestions made by the Hydrographer of the Admiralty. The ship of war detailed for the expedition will meet the mail at Barbados on 11 August and proceed with the whole party to St George. Depending upon the weather stations may be established to the south-east of St George, with one possibly near Clarkes Court. Parties may also be landed at or near Calyvena Island, Point Saline and Ewing's Bay. Notes that the determination of the points of observation depends entirely on the probable cloud-drift. Describes requirements if observatories have to be built, noting a grant has been received from Treasury to pay for local services and supplies. Asks Under Secretary to convey thanks to the Governor of the Windward Islands for the manner in which he is prepared to aid the expedition. |
