Title | Copy letter from Michael Foster, to the Under Secretary of State, The War Office |
Date | 8 November 1887 |
Description | In reply to the Under Secretary's letter of 21 October [1887] accompanied by a report with enclosures from the Commanding Royal Engineer in Egypt, Foster is directed to say that the Delta Committee of the Royal Society, having learnt from Captain Dickinson that an additional outlay would be necessary, stated their willingness to provide £50. Having subsequently learnt that the pipe had broken at some distance from the surface, the Committee replied to Dickinson's query for forward action that the pipe should be pulled up.
The Royal Society are prepared to discharge all the expenses which have so far been incurred. The results of the boring have proved of such great scientific interest and of so much promise that the Delta Committee have been authorised by the President and Council to make an effort to secure adequate funds for continuing the exploration on an extended scale. Foster is directed to convey the high appreciation of the Committee for the assistance so freely given to them and the skilful manner in which the operations have been carried out. They desire especially to thank Captain Dickinson for the great interest he has shown in the research.
Foster acknowledges the receipt of specimens of the borings. Unfortunately nine of the 24 bottles broke more or less spoiling the contents. |
