| Description | Rucker states that it would be quite contrary to the Statutes [of the Royal Society] to allow Mr Erskine Murray to withdraw his paper as he wishes to do. No paper which has been read can be withdrawn and the original copy must be returned to be preserved in the Archive. Rucker says that permission to make a copy can only be given by the Council but if Murray sends in a formal request, then authorisation can be given to take a copy at once and the Council can approve the action afterwards.
Rucker asks that the original copy is not sent to the printers since it may then be returned in an imperfect state, and that Kelvin tells Murray to make a copy at once.
No abstract of Murray's paper has been publuished since the referees thought that as an abstract it was too long, and it was to be replaced by the shortened paper, which would have been published in the 'Proceedings [of the Royal Society]' if Murray had seen his way to prepare it. If Murray prepares a very short abstract it might still be possible to publish it.
Rucker encloses [not enclosed], as requested by Kelvin, a note about van Rijckevorsel, and thanks Kelvin for the 'Age of the earth' which Rucker intends to read carefully. |
