Title | Copy letter from Michael Foster and Arthur William Rucker, to the Secretaries of the Joint Permanent Eclipse Committee, The Royal Astronomical Society, Burlington House |
Date | 6 May 1898 |
Description | The President and Council of the Royal Society last year appointed, under the title of Government Grant Review Committee, a Committee to consider and report upon the general working of the Government Grant.
The Committee made a report in which the enclosed paragraphs occur [text pasted on page] relating to the report of the Committee in 1897 on the grant for observing the eclipse of 1896. The report stated that the special grant of £1000 had been divided between fiver observers, two of whom went to Norway and three when to Japan, each receiving £200. Originally planned to send four observers to Japan and Siberia and two to Norway. The grant was made to Professor H H Turner (for the Committee) while the report is signed by Mr Common. Think that in future the names of all the observers should be submitted to the Government Grant Committee for the record.
The President and Council would be glad to know any observations on these paragraphs. The above report of the Review Committee is being distributed to the members of the Government Grant Committee. The President and Council propose to transmit to the Chairman of Board B (Physics and Observational Astronomy) any observations which the Committee may make in reply to the invitation of the President and Council. [The Chairman] wants to be able to speak with authority at the meeting of the Government Grant on May 18. |
