Title | Copy letter from [Arthur William Rucker and Michael Foster], to the Secretary of the Imperial Academy of Sciences, St Petersburg |
Date | 18 November 1898 |
Description | Briefly discusses the two International Conferences on the establishment of an International Catalogue of Scientific Literature held in London in July 1896 and October 1898. Copies of the reports of the discussions at each are enclosed [not attached]. Russia and Italy did not attend the July 1898 conference. It is hoped that they would nevertheless be willing to support the project for establishing the Catalogue. A letter has been sent through the Foreign Office to the Russian Government discussing these facts but it is likely that the Imperial Academy of Science will be consulted in the matter. The Royal Society therefore expresses the hope that the Academy's powerful influence will be used to support a project which will be of the greatest utility to science.
Briefly discusses language provision and the cost of the book catalogue. If Russia consents to be presented on the Provisional International Committee the views of the Government of Russia's scientific men would be expressed to an extent which would not otherwise be possible, but the whole scheme is to be laid before another International Conference. |
