| Description | Concerns arrangements for the Government Grant. Rix states that the only heliostat belonging to the grant is made for, and still in use by, Professor Liveing and Professor Dewar; asks if the completed list of apparatus is to be printed; and states that the advertisement includes Stokes' instruction that applications are to be sent in before 21 October.
He discusses the convenience of having the meetings on the 20 and 21 November, in advance of the Royal Society Council meeting of the 24 November, rather than in the Society's anniversary week. Dr Michael Foster's practice of the last two years, of holding committee meetings late into the evenings immediately preceeding the anniversary is discussed, with it being noted that the Government Grant meetings then would add further strain. However, whatever is decided by the officers will be carried out.
The books will not be able to be circulated as far in advance of the meeting, but if the register for applications is closed on 21 October, they could send them ten days or two weeks before the meeting. The Council meeting could be held a week before the anniversary, with the added reason that the first Thursday comes on 1 November, which would mean a long gap before the December Council. A list of deceased Fellows of the Society is enclosed as requested [not included].
Rix states he has returned 'from the North' refreshed and ready for the pile of work that awaits him, and thanks Stokes for his letter about type-writers which he sent to Rix's friend Mr Rawnsley. |
