| Description | Thanks him for his letter of 16 and 18 November. Has reported his suggestion to the Chairman of the Indian Advisory Committee and with his approval will write to the India Office in regard to sewage, as he suggests. Respecting the proposal of the Colonial Office that the Royal Society should undertake the distribution of about £1000 a year for five years, for carrying on Tropical Diseases research, it was resolved to take no action until the matter comes before Council. Opinion is much divided on the subject.
1. Some Fellows think acceptance should only be on the condition that the Royal Society is left in the unfettered control over the money.
2. There is objection to forming one of the many corporate bodies under an Advisory Board, the Royal Society much retain its dignity.
3. Objection to accepting any grant for a limited number of years unless provision is made for a permanent post for the special study of parasitic protozoa. Anything less is a waste, as no experienced men can afford to take a temporary position. It is also not possible to allocate £250 out of the £1000 to go towards a Professorship of protozoology at the London Tropical School, as the matter of the £1000 is to come before Council.
Has asked Colonel David Bruce if he would be willing to replace Foster on the Advisory Board while he is away. If he declines Geikie will ask Martin or Bradford. |
