| Description | President and Council at their meeting yesterday had the under consideration the letters referring to the proposed allocation of a sum exceeding £1000 a year to the Royal Society for researches in Tropical Diseases during the next five years. They accept the offer, with the understanding that the responsibility for the selection and direction of the lines of research shall remain entirely with the Royal Society. They also assent to £250, out of the £1000, going towards a Professorship of Protozoology, but would urge the Colonial Office to make the position permanent.
They are also in favour of Sir Michael Foster's suggestion that the Professorship should be in connection with the University of London. The study of tropical diseases would be best protected if the Professor would also give a definite but strictly limited course of instruction at the Tropical School of Medicine, and to devote the main part of his time to research in such laboratories, here or abroad, as might be prescribed. |
