| Description | Thanks de Lapparent for his letter of 30 October. Understands the position of France in the matter of the International Seismic organisation and is glad to have de Lapparent's letter which puts France's case clearly. The Council of the Royal Society at its meeting last week decided to advise the British Government to join the International Seismic Organisation on the condition that all the alterations in the constitution of the organisation adopted by the Frankfort Conference of 1904 be in substance agreed to and in the meantime the participation of Britain be paid for a period of four years instead of 12, and that France and the United States should also consent to join. Whether or not France will take part, will be considered by the British Government a reason for refraining remains to be seen. The Society will have a meeting of its Seismological Committee to consider de Lapparent's letter and it will no doubt subsequently be brought before the Council. Will let de Lapparent know once the matter is finally decided. |
