Title | Copy letter from Joseph Larmor and Archibald Geikie, to the Permanent Administrative Secretary, His Majesty's Treasury |
Date | 30 November 1905 |
Description | The excess expenditure of £1,200 beyond the estimates for the Magnetic Observatory buildings at Eskdale has been referred by the President and Council of the Royal Society to the Executive Committee of the National Physical Laboratory. Explains this Committee disclaim responsibility for any excess expenditure; any additional work that has been asked for has been asked for on the assumption that the original estimate was sufficient. The President and Council are informed that the building work has rested entirely with the Office of Works and that there has been no reason for the Committee to anticipate any excess expenditure at all.
The President and Council had assumed that the vesting of the observatory once complete would be the same as for the observatory at Kew, that the fabric would be in charge of the Office of Works, but the Society would be responsible for the internal fittings. The Society would hesitate to adopt the suggestion that that buildings at Eskdale be vested in the Society. |
