Title | Copy letter from Dr Joseph Larmor, to The Under Secretary of State, India Office |
Date | 15 June 1908 |
Description | Herewith are the following resolutions of the Observatories Committee of the Royal Society relating to documents that have been submitted recently for their consideration by the Government of India.
1. The Committee recognise the difficulty of collating completely the observations of ships' logs, with the existing staff, but the immediate collation of daily values would likely have an important influence upon the accuracy of ships' observations. 2. The Committee regards the scheme of the Director General as satisfactory, and accept that balloon ascents higher than 25,000 feet are impracticable during the monsoon.
The Committee are satisfied with the Report dealing with Solar Radiation as carrying out their intentions as far as at present feasible.
3. On the reports of the Kodaikanal, Madras [Chennai] and Bombay (Colaba and Alibag) Observatories, the Committee are satisfied with the activity at Kodaikanal. Regarding section one of the Memo of the Director General, at Greenwich and elsewhere, the best definition is obtained with an objective reduced to four inches aperture or under and that large focal length is much more important than increase of aperture.
No portion of the Solar programme at Kodaikanal should be abandoned in order to undertake astrophysical observations.
The Committee have had no previous intimation that the record of the most prominent widened lines in Sunspot spectra was to be discontinued at the Kodaikanal and Madras Observatories. These observations were included in the programme of work. The Committee do not press that such observations should be resumed at Kodaikanal, as long as they are happening at Poona.
The Committee desires to express their satisfaction with the progress being made with the special computations and reductions in connections with the Colaba Magnetic records. |
