| Description | Dr [William] Huggins called at the Royal Society this morning and was anxious no to have to give up another important engagement next Thursday unless it was absolutely necessary to be present. Rix thought it might be helpful to show Huggins the portion of Mr [Joseph Norman] Lockyer's paper which has been authorised and which is in print. Having read the proof Huggins was anxious that Rix should let Rayleigh know that the paper has been already completely answered in the January number of the 'Observatory', number 171 page 52, and is now not only quite out of date but shown to be absurd. Lockyer's paper was written before Orion was in position for the necessary observation. Orion has since moved and Keeler has made the observation which puts the disputed point at rest. Huggins is anxious the Royal Society should not stultify itself by reading the paper and will not be at the meeting. |
