| Description | In answer to an enquiry from Sir Ray Lankester, advises the Societa Italiana is an ancient society of high standing dating from the eighteenth century, established in the north of Italy, moving to Rome in 1876. Advises he does not know if there is any rivalry between it and the Royal Academy of the Lincei, but he doubts it as the two organisations have different characters and constitutions. Advises the Societa Italiana is also called the 'Societa del XL' and has a restricted membership, with the members on their list numbered to 40, and the 40th is left blank. A foreign list is restricted to 12, and included Lord Rayleigh [John William Strutt, 3rd Baron Rayleigh, PRS]. The Royal Society has 50 volumes of their 'quarto memorie,' and advises that Signor [Vito] Volterra [FRS] is a distinguished mathematician on the Royal Society's foreign [members] list. |
