| Description | Advises that he had a long talk with [Sir William Abbott] Herdman, FRS, about extracting oil from plankton, and Herdman is more optimistic about the possibility than he was during the war. Herdman advised he has obtained some pounds of material with a tow net 1 foot aperture towed for a quarter of an hour off the coast of Norway, and the plankton has a heavy yield of oil. The Board's steamer might be able to look into the matter when it starts, but unfortunately the better sites for plankton are far away, such as Ireland, the Shetlands and Greenland. Hardy thinks that any plankton fishery would have to be similar to those for herring, following plankton swarms as they move from place to place. |
