Galileo was an Italian astronomer, engineer and polymath, he held the Chair of Mathematics in Pisa and later taught at the University of Padua. He designed and built his own telescopes and used them to observe the changing phases of the planet Venus, confirming his belief in the heliocentric model of the Solar System. He is shown here around 70 years old, with his gaze directed beyond the frame of the painting.
