By Samuel Drummond, 1798
Oil on canvas

As a young man, Aubert observed the Great Comet of 1744 which sparked a lifelong passion for astronomy. During a successful career at his father’s insurance firm, he grew his collection of telescopes at Loampit Hill in Deptford to one of the finest private observatories in the country. In this formal portrait, the view out of the window behind him shows a rugged landscape under a dark night sky.
