| Description | Press cuttings and other printed information concerning the Royal Society. Compiled by the organisation's staff. Cuttings include accounts of the Royal Society's conversaziones, anniversary meetings and other events. Other content: reports on the Royal Institution's centenary (pp.1-3); plague in Alexandria (pp.13-15, p.31); the malarial mosquito (pp.17-21, p.31 and throughout); solar eclipse (pp.61-63, pp.71-73); National Physical Laboratory (pp.73-75); Royal Indian Engineering College at Cooper's Hill (pp.103-115). Other topics are highly varied. There are some court reports and letters to the editors of the various newspapers are also collected. Some ephemera is present, notably a telegram to the Royal Society recommending that the Charter Book be brought before the King in case he should wish to sign it (pp.114-115).
Generally, the cuttings are attributed to the source newspaper and dated in manuscript. The volume contains blank pages, usually the verso pages of the book. A paper label on the cover is inscribed: 'June 6 1899-February 25 1901. Royal Society Scrap Book. General.' |
