Description | Press cuttings and other printed information concerning the two astronomical events and the involvement of Royal Society Fellows in associated observations. Compiled by the organisation's staff. Cuttings pp.1-29 relate to the transit; pp.31-39 describe the eclipse. Reports on the Transit of Venus come from many parts of the world and observing conditons are usually noted. Total solar eclipse cuttings note the involvement of the Royal Society the expedition to Siam [Thailand] financed by a £1,000 grant allocated by the Crown. Much of this material relates to the King of Siam. Arthur Schuster led the Bristish observing party and reported on the expedition's partial sucesss by telegram.
Generally, the cuttings are dated, but the source newspapers are not identified. The book contains many blank pages and is blank after p.39. A paper label on the cover is inscribed: 'Transit of Venus 1874 and Total Solar Eclipse 1875'. |
